Having passed my Mom and younger sister in Latin studies, I eventually could no longer teach myself. I especially struggled with understanding the Latin grammar and knowing how to properly translate verbs. Knowing our neighbor Clay Daniel was not only adept in several languages but also an affable guy, my mom approached him to tutor me. I was impressed with Clay’s vast knowledge of Latin–both vocabulary and grammar. He helped me continue on with Artes Latinae in ninth grade coaching me through difficult Latin and English grammar concepts and lengthy Latin translations. He easily understood my questions. I would highly recommend Clay–for Latin or a number of other subjects.

Thanks to Clay’s tutoring, I was able to evaluate the questions, eliminate obvious wrong answers and use my reasoning skills to choose the right one. Clay is a terrific tutor: he was patient, thorough in his explanations and used a range of techniques to help me understand better. My LSAT score improved by six points, which resulted directly from working with Clay. I was accepted into several law schools with very competitive admission criteria. Clay’s very effective tutoring skills were key to my success; I would highly recommend him.

His name is Clay Daniel, and he teaches the GRE, GMAT, and LSAT. I couldn’t have been happier with the way things worked out. I can’t recommend him enough: he is patient, incredibly intelligent, and optimistic. He did his best to accommodate my schedule. It ended up being several hundred dollars cheaper than a GRE course with a nearby national test prep company, and my “syllabus” was catered to what I needed to work on. Let me know if you have any questions. Again, I sincerely recommend him over any of the national testing companies.

To Whom It May Concern:

I wanted to take a moment to share my personal and academic observations of Clay Daniel with you. In the year 2000, I was a Dallas businessperson in my very late 20’s, weighing options for my future. Attempting to fulfill a lifelong academic goal of earning a Juris Doctorate, I began the process of searching for suitable law schools. After considerable due diligence, I narrowed the field to five likely suspects, the best of which was the closest in proximity to my home and the highest ranked of the bunch, Southern Methodist University. SMU Law is in the top tier of the national rankings, and my undergraduate grades would never, ever be sufficient to pass Admissions muster there, so I was relying almost entirely on my LSAT score to offset them. Enter the local test prep provider and Clay Daniel.

As a product of more business meetings and presentations than I care to ever remember, I feared yet another in a series of pedestrian PowerPoint presentations awaiting me in the learning center. Not so. In fact, what I found instead was an engaged, sincere, brilliant young mind in Clay Daniel. Frankly, I was enthused by the classroom material mostly because he was enthused. The study of LSAT subject matter can be dull, and Clay made the process very enjoyable. My initial score improved over 10% at final testing, which is the equivalent to a country mile in terms of Admissions standards. I finished comfortably within the mid-eighty percentile, which I considered a personal triumph, having not seen a textbook or taken a standardized test in years. Clay was able to shore up my chronic inability to successfully complete the bizarre and much maligned logic games, and helped improve my already solid performance on the logical reasoning section (I missed only two questions on the first section of twenty five). As the mark of any exceptional instructor, he muted my biggest shortcomings and enhanced my strongest talents. He did this through clear explanation, an open forum for questions, native intellect, and a winning attitude.

Personally, I was able to have numerous discussions with Clay on various subjects outside of class. As an older, harder bitten character than Clay, I was impressed with his breadth of knowledge and his enthusiasm for it at such a young age. He was the sort of person that I would have hired immediately had he walked into my office, regardless of his skill level in my chosen field of finance. I would rather take the time to teach an inspired thinker than hire a dull mind with a broad skill set. To make this point perfectly clear, I do not, and have not, written hardly any letters of recommendation on any person’s behalf. Clay is worthy of any superlative I can jot down on this paper; his intellect and ability far exceed the vast majority of life on this planet, which sadly includes my own. He helped change my life, and will most certainly be a credit to any organization lucky enough to have him.

Clay Daniel and his Clayborne Education tutoring program prepared me to not just take the GMAT, but to excel on the test. On Day One, I felt terribly unprepared to take either the quantitative or the verbal section on the test and scored a 640 on the diagnostic test. Over the course of the two months that I worked with Clay, I was able to re-learn key math and grammar concepts while also building an arsenal of test-taking skills and tricks (test taking skill building began on Day One). Further, Clay helped me build up my confidence levels in my test taking ability. By the time the GMAT came around, I thought that I would score in the low 700s and ended up getting a 740. Without Clay, I wouldn’t have come close to breaking 700. I would recommend that anyone needing test preparation give Clay a call, talk about your goals, and get ready to exceed those goals. To top it all off, Clay is a stand-up guy and a great person and someone who I was happy to welcome into my home two nights a week. I really can’t say enough good things about Clay Daniel and Clayborne Education – but I’m biased as he helped me get a 740 on the GMAT!

Clayborne Education is Charlottesville’s best-kept secret.

TutorTrove’s Whiteboard is an exciting new application designed to enable students and their tutors to connect via the Internet. GRE, GMAT, and SAT students can write equations and draw graphs, complete with plotted points. LSAT students can upload test pages and work together with their tutor to break down logic games or the formal logic inherent in many logical reasoning questions.
